If your in a phase of your life where it seems like you are peddling upstream, you’ve most probably hit a few success-hindering habits that you’ll want to kick out of your life. We all have these moments where success seems like it keeps eluding us. However, it’s important to recognize them in time, before they become stubborn ingrained habits that continue to sabotage our every action we take.
There are a few things you can do to take back control and invite success back in your life. Start your analysis by looking within. This can be challenging, as success-hindering habits are often hidden in the subconscious behaviors and thinking patterns of our mind. Therefore, try to reflect honestly on your life – your behaviors, habits and attitudes – to determine if there might be some things you may be able to do differently to achieve different results. Ideally you would plan for a self-reflection session specifically aimed at discovering these success-hindering habits. It doesn’t need to take long, but it would definitely be helpful if you would use a notebook or journal to jot down some thoughts and ideas.
When you reflect back on something you did during the day (if you do it at the end of your day) or, reflecting back on the day before (if you do your self-reflection first thing in the morning), you’ll start to become more conscious of some behavior patterns that can look like you are sabotaging yourself for successful outcomes. However, when they come to the surface of your conscious mind, there’s a strong likelihood that there’s some tweaking you can do to increase the odds when it comes to achieving success.
Your tweaking might include banishing the following success-hindering habits that are surprisingly common, yet insanely integral, in preventing you from being successful.
Success-Hindering Habits You Ought To Let Go
Assess yourself. Give some thought to whether you’ve adopted any of the following success-hindering habits:
Did you ever hear the famous quote from Suzy Kassel “Doubts kills more dreams than failure ever will”? This is so true! By far, lacking self-confidence is the most damaging habit when it comes to your bid for success. The worst thing you can do is doubt your worthiness for a successful outcome. That particular mindset makes achieving anything very challenging. So instead of doubting yourself, affirm that you can do it:
- Believe that you’re capable of doing anything you set your mind to doing
- Know that you’re worth every ounce of positive outcome
- Avoid closing the door on an opportunity because you don’t feel you’ll do well at it
And to hammer this down, here’s another quote to keep with you, when you discover brain-chatter based on self-doubt:
“If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.” — Vincent Van Gogh
Putting off getting tasks done will likely result in a less than favorable result. When opportunity knocks, answer the door! Instead of waiting until later.
Procrastination is often caused by self-doubt, the topic we discussed above. So, it’s well possible, that if you can solve self-doubt that your procrastination might be solved too. However, that’s not always the root cause. But here’s some good news. Whatever the root cause for procrastination, you can train yourself to become hyper productive, and get 10 times more done than you ever could before.
If you come across a task or something you know you need to do, and you always hear these little voices in your head saying, “I’ll do it later” or “I’ll first go through all the other things I need to do”, you will do very well if you can adapt “The Warrior Battlefield Mindset”.
Yes there are moments for strategy and planning, but when you’re on the battlefield you can not say to your opponent, wait a moment, I’m going to plan this first, and will fight it out with you later…;)
You have to act in the moment. So, if you can connect to the mindset of the Battlefield Warrior and say to yourself “I’M GOING TO TAKE CARE OF THIS RIGHT NOW!” it will not only silence these little sabotaging voices that can spin around and around, but it will amaze you of how many things you get done and how fast you get them done as well.
From now on, use this as your mantra every time you find yourself putting things off. Say to yourself “I’m doing it now!” or “I’m going to take care of this right now!”
If there are tasks that took you hours, days or weeks to perform, just try this, and be amazed.
You can supplement the above action with the following tips:
- Prioritize your tasks
- Aim to complete tasks within the time you’ve allotted for them
- Jump at every opportunity you get to complete a task
If you struggle to change your habits, know that you’re not alone. It’s a common challenge because these patterns are simmering under the surface of our conscious mind. Therefore we need to learn how to access our subconscious mind in order to reprogram for different outcomes. Journaling is one way to do that. Another way is seeking professional help, for example from a hypnotherapist. However, we have found that listening to a self-hypnosis audio track that addresses the specific issue you’re struggling with, can have tremendous results really fast.
Even if I recognized the first two issues within myself many years ago, I still had a really tough time to solve my self-doubt and procrastination. As a self-improvement addict, there are obviously many ways I have learned to reach the subconscious mind. Nevertheless, one way I have found that has been so amazingly easy and simple when it comes to changing success-hindering habits that are simmering in the subconscious mind is self-hypnosis.
I came very late to self-hypnosis. But because self-hypnosis has so dramatically changed my life I have created a course on this topic, and if you think that could be something of interest to you too, you can find more information here:
Setting daily goals for yourself is probably something you already do, but you’re likely wondering why it is you haven’t been able to meet those goals. A big hindrance is disorganization. Sometimes goals seem so attainable, but because there’s no real plan in place to attain them, you end up missing out.
It’s easy to get lost in a cluttered environment. Especially if that cluttered environment is in your head! Disorganization is like a cloud hanging over the sky. Without clear view of where the mountains are, a pilot flying a small airplane will have to rely on his dashboard and instruments to navigate safely through. And even then, he’ll be flying at high risk. The same goes for disorganization. Clarity invites focus, and that brings us to the next point…
4. Lost focus
In today’s digital world, it’s so easy to get distracted, and everything can seem important too. That’s causing stress, and stress is rarely making you perform at your best. Losing focus of what you really want to achieve is a sure way to end up under-accomplished. Success doesn’t come just because you want it. Your mission should be to maintain focus on your goals so they don’t slip away unnoticed. Take an action each day, even if it’s small, and move forward to your goal.
- Be serious about the success you want to achieve. Make it one of your priorities
- Analyze when or where you lose focus, and if the distraction is coming from outside sources. For example, if you’re working on a project, but you check your mobile every time a new message comes in, you’ve lost your focus. Getting back in the productive and focused state of mind before the message can cost a lot of time and energy, and can drain your brain
- Start your day with doing at least one action that brings you closer to your goal. If you are starting your day with reading your emails you might end up brain dead by the time you need to do some real important work…
So now that you have a look at what could possibly be hindering your ability to succeed, it’s time to make some very real changes in your life and how you approach your targets.
There’s nothing that can get in the way of you being a success story! All you need to do is adopt an attitude for success. Start with throwing away any negative habits that hinder your journey to success.
